The EPRIS project, approved in January 2014, originates from the political will of the Portuguese Justice Minister to incentivize innovative projects to implement in Prisional Establishments and stems from the setting of a Cooperative Protocol between the Justice Minister, Reinserção e Serviços Prisionais, a Santa Casa da Misericórdia do Porto and the Piaget Institute.

The project's design allowed EPRIS to articulate the questions of Educational Intervention with scientific production and investigation, associated to the development of new pedagogical models.

The project, based on the potential of e-learning as a pedagogical differentiation device promoting digital inclusion, aims to encourage policies focused on mitigating risk factors of social and labor exclusion after serving the sentence.
